My first born

I don’t know how to start this without sounding crass, but, when I found out my then wife was pregnant, I didn’t know how to feel about it.

I mean part of me was really happy.

But, in being honest with myself, the woman I was married to, I knew in my heart it would not last.

Yes, this makes me sound like an asshole. But, it was not a good situation. I was very unhappy, and miserable.

In fact, a week after she told me that we were expecting, she asked:

“Where do you see us in five years.”

I swear on Captain America’s Shield, in my head I said:  “divorced.”

That answer turned out to be true.

Out loud, it was your typical cliche answer. Happy. Healthy blah blah blah. I was going by what my parents seemed to spout. Do whatever it takes to make it work.

That is A piece of advice I swear I will never give to my children. Personally I think if things aren’t working out, it’s okay to cut ties and move on. No harm in saying you tried, but not everything is meant to work out.

However, all of that led to my first born child.

Jordan Damani S.

You see, Jordan was born on September 13, 2003 at Precisely 5:59 am. This is our first picture together. I was young, stupid, and completely unprepared.

However, this young beautiful man, helped me to grow up fast. I honestly do not think I’d be half the person I am today, without him.

It didn’t take long for me to latch onto this kid. Like, I would wake up and get up with him throughout the night, so his mother could sleep. He, wouldn’t. So, the only thing that would calm him, and it’s bad to say, but we watched Spongebob all hours of the night.

Honestly, it’s one of my favorite memories, amongst thousands. He used to climb out of his crib and come sleep on my side of the bed. Again, a great memory.

Over the years, I’ve watched him grow. It’s been a privilege and an honor. I’ve seen the man he’s becoming, and I love it.

For comparison sake, I was nothing like him at 15. I was the opposite actually.

(This is one of my favorite pictures of all time).

  1. Randomly comes up and hugs me
  2. Still kisses me on the cheek
  3. Is kind to everyone
  4. Still holds my hand in public from time to time.
  5. Respectful
  6. Actually wants to hang around
  7. Is great with his younger sisters and brother

I honestly could go on and on, but, as I’ve said, he’s nothing like I was at 15.

He’s better.

Much, much, much, much, better.

I know he will turn out to be a much better man than I, and as a parent, I can honestly say that is my only true goal in life.

For all 5 of my children to turn out better than I ever could. Better than their Mother.

I believe the younger ones, have a great blueprint to follow. All they need to do is look up to Jordan. He’s always there to help and do what is needed when we need it done.

Because no matter what we ask of Jordan, he never gives us attitude and does all that we ask of him.

I am proud of him.  The man he is, and who he continues to become. He’s been a great kid, through the ups, the downs, the highs and lows, the Blackness Everdeen, and everything in-between.

May your birthday be filled with as much joy as you deserve my son. You have given me 473 lifetimes worth of joy. You have made my life better, and in the process made me a better man.

Happy birthday my son! May our years continue to be bright, and full of laughter!

Happy birthday to Jordan! It was nice to see him last month, even for only a few minutes ❤️ And as a child of divorce, I believe that it’s ok to not stay together “for the kids”. Clearly there was another path for you.
